THE VISIT
Originally a marshy site between two branches of the Seine, the Marais was slowly transformed into gardens and vegetable plots by religious congregations. From the 17th century and throughout the following century, this neighborhood became home to the Parisian aristocracy, as evidenced today by the Place des Vosges and the elegant private mansions (with their hidden gardens!), which still bear witness to the grandeur of the time.
Spared from the urban transformations of Baron Haussmann and from Le Corbusier’s 1925 Plan Voisin, the Marais remains one of the most evocative districts of Old Paris.
From the July Column in Place de la Bastille to contemporary art galleries, from refined residences to the lively atmosphere of the Pletzl, your guide will give voice to this extraordinary neighborhood and its most intimate soul.
